The Courts Service has been around in a number of guises for
about 900 years. Now known as Her Majesty's Courts Service two of the previous
names have been:
- Lord Chancellor's Department.
- Court Service.
Neither of the above names incorporated all of the services
that we know see which were brought together in April 2005 and are:
- The Magistrates Court.
- Crown Court.
- County Court.
- Supreme Court.
In previous incarnations Crown Courts were known as Assizes and
the Magistrates Courts were part of the Home Office. The Crown Courts, County
Courts and Supreme Courts were administered by the Lord Chancellors Department.
Simplification came between 1995 and 2001 with the formation of Her Majesty's
Court Service which brought together all of the courts for the first time.
