The Courts Service has been around in
a number of guises for about 900 years. Now known as Her Majesty's Courts
Service two of the previous names have been:
- Lord Chancellor's
Department.
- Court
Service.
Neither of the above names incorporated
all of the services that we know see which were brought together in April 2005
and are:
- The Magistrates
Court.
- Crown
Court.
- County
Court.
- Supreme
Court.
In previous incarnations Crown Courts
were known as Assizes and the Magistrates Courts were part of the Home Office.
The Crown Courts, County Courts and Supreme Courts were administered by the
Lord Chancellors Department. Simplification came between 1995 and 2001 with the
formation of Her Majesty's Court Service which brought together all of the
courts for the first time.
